The Electronic Payments issues work group of the National Electronic Commerce Coordinating Council is devoted to issues surrounding government acceptance of electronic payments.
As more states migrate services to the electronic and online environments, using methods such as point-of-sale devices, kiosks, and the Internet, the need for secure and cost-effective electronic payment mechanisms grows. This work group is investigating the strategies states use to deal with credit card acceptance as well as exploring new payment alternatives.
The group sponsored a seminar on May 12, 1999, where members shared strategies and experiences with their peers and heard from industry representatives about emerging issues in the field. We hope to learn much more about the current use and acceptance of credit cards and other payment mechanisms through a survey we are conducting with the National Association of State Comptrollers (NASC).
