SYNOPSIS

e-THEMATIC MAP BASE

FOR

INTEGRATED SERVICES & PORTALS

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

The aim of the proposed project and research work is to integrate and complement research and development techniques and methodologies for developing integrated services and portals on an overlay of a National electronic Thematic Map Base (e-TMB) with facilities for regular queries and transactions between the user (citizen) and the portal publisher.

The objectives to achieve the above-stated aim are:

  1. to identify the basic design issues for integrated services and portals, as identified by the four sub-groups of the IS&P2000 work group;

2. to develop a domain component model and system classifiers and system architecture for an object-oriented model integrating various components and their inter-relationship, with a view to developing a Back-end for the Publisher and a Front-end for the User;

3. to develop and demonstrate a prototype for an e-TMB Portal Secure System for the framework developed under 2. above by the use of selected case applications;

4. to host a Portal Map Base On-line and propose the methods of networked updation techniques and various Search Tools for global operations; and

5. to develop Solution Models for networked compilation, query management and transactions for a single authentication/authorization and settlement system.

 

 

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

The scope is limited to developing a domain component model and system prototype for an object-oriented model and framework for integrating spatial databases and traditional thematic attribute data with basic Map Base, design of Query and reporting system and creating an environment for exploring such models.

The issues of various design components of an e-TMB are:

i. Geographic Information System (GIS)

ii. Data Base Management System (DBMS)

iii. Multimedia Technology

iv. Knowledge-based System (KBS)

v. Virtual Reality (VR)

GIS is a powerful system and would provide the basic skeletal base for the integration of e-TMB for ISP. However, GIS requires high computation power and lacks integration of network tools. To provide core processing operations and a highly user-friendly portal, GIS will have to go into the background and provide back-end support for the entire system. The DBMS would need to be closely coupled with the GIS at the back-end and also provide front-end Query support for the User (Citizen). With dropping costs, it is possible to integrate Multimedia Technology with GIS which would provide the ideal front-end for the e-TMB for ISP. There would be a need to develop the knowledge systems for the middle-ware.
